"Aaron's Gift"
Grade A+

Part 1. Name three techniques an author uses to create character and give an example from the story for each one.
Three techniques an author can use to create character are physically describing the character, presenting the character's thoughts, speech, and actions, and presenting what others say or think about the character. An example of physically describing the character (Aaron) is "Aaron was, it must be said, a Class A, triple fantastic roller skater." An example of presenting the character's thoughts, speech, and actions is "He broke a cookie into small crumbs and and tossed some toward the pigeon." An example of presenting what others say or think about the character is "Sophie!" he called to his wife. "Did you see this! Ten years old and it's better than Dr. Belasco could do. He's a genius!" Very good answer!

2. Use each of these vocabulary words in an original sentence that explains something about the story.
You may change the form of the words.

assassinate - The Ukrainian czar from 1855 to 1881, Alexander the Second, was assassinated, which made Alexander the Third become the new czar.

stoop - When Aaron was bringing Pidge back to his apartment he saw Noreen Callahan playing on the stoop or front porch of the apartment building so he had her take off his roller skates.

frenzy - Pidge was very frenzied, or wildly excited, because he could not fly.

mascot - Carl told Aaron he could be in his gang if he would let them use Pidge as the gang's mascot to bring the gang good luck.

thrash - When Aaron found Pidge, Pidge was thrashing around and trying to fly, but failing and only managing to move around wildly.

3. Write a paragraph to answer this question. Be sure you relate your answer to the plot of the story.

Can a person "make up" for terrible things that have happened to someone else?

Yes, a person can make up for terrible things that have happened to someone else, although they cannot make it completely the way it was before the incident. Aaron's grandmother lost her goat, whom she loved dearly when she was little and Aaron wanted to make up for it because it was her sixtieth birthday. Aaron planned to do this by giving her the pigeon he found and healed. However, when Carl's gang was trying to steal Pidge, she flew off and Aaron's grandmother never got her. But, Aaron's grandmother considered it a gift that Aaron led that pigeon to freedom. Although this made Aaron's grandmother feel very good, she will always be scarred from the tim she lost her beloved goat.
